Termini station is not only the main hub of trains, subway and public transport in Rome, but also the real center of the city. Around the train station lie some of the most prestigious neighborhoods and rich monuments of Rome: Castro Pretorio, the Monti district, the Esquilino and San Lorenzo.
Inside the Castro Pretorio district, north of the station, we find a curious and fascinating part of Rome unknown to most people: the "crossroads of the Four Fountains", a cross between the ancient streets of Via Pia (now Via del Quirinale and Via XX Settembre) and Via Felice (now Via Agostino Depretis and Via delle Quattro Fontane).
This "crossroad" is not just a simple cross: at its every corner there is a beautiful fountain, from which takes its name "Quattro Fontane".
The sculptures represent two male figures, or the Tiber (the symbol of Rome) and Arno (symbol of Florence), and two female figures, that Diana (symbol of fidelity) and Juno (symbol of courage).
The characteristic cross is now the boundary between urban neighborhoods Castro Praetorio, Trevi (the neighborhood of the famous fountain) and the Monti district, one of the largest in Rome and also the richest in monuments: the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine, the Markets of Trajan, the Quirinale and the Imperial Forum. Two of the four papal basilicas of Rome are present in this area:the basilicas of San Giovanni in Laterano and Santa Maria Maggiore.
