One of the most important meeting points in Rome for tourists and Romans is definitely Piazza del Popolo. The large square from which three of the most prestigious streets of the historic center of the Eternal City begin, Via del Corso, Via del Babuino and Via di Ripetta, suggests a unique sense of welcome to all those who pass by them: it is a unique and unparalleled experience to see the immense Egyptian obelisk in the center of the square, you will literally feel lulled by the beauty of Rome.
You can admire the perfect symmetry of the shape of the square and definitely feel amazed accessing it from the Porta del Popolo (in ancient times Porta Flaminia), the north gate of the Aurelian Walls that marked the passage of the Via Flaminia. This road used to be the most important road leading to the north, up to Ariminum (Rimini today): originally the Flaminia started from a much southern point, from the north-east of the Capitol to follow the entire route of Via del Corso. Today it starts from the north of Piazza del Popolo (Piazzale Flaminio).
Definetely a must see are the three churches that are inside the square: the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo (on the side of the Piazza entrance) and the "twin churches" (Santa Maria in Montesanto and Santa Maria dei Miracoli) in the center of the trident, which marks the beginning of the three streets. The first church houses real masterpieces by some of the greatest masters of Italian art such as Caravaggio, Pinturicchio, Raphael and Bramante . The square was named after it.
Do not miss the opportunity to stay in a wonderful bed and breakfast in the area close to Piazza del Popolo: live the unique experience of staying, even for a short period, in the heart of Rome and really breathe its unique atmosphere.
