Entering Villa Borghese from Piazza del Popolo you can reach one of the most beautiful and famous terraces in the world: the terrace of the Pincio. The Pincio is the first public park in Rome, an idea of Napoleon I, and is also the most loved by Romans, who gather together with tourists to enjoy views of the immense dome of St. Peter's and the Terrace of the Campo Marzio. Its beauty has inspired architects of other Italian cities (especially in the north-central territory) who then built several other "Pinci" on the model of the Roman original.
The Terrace as it is now was designed by architect Giovanni Valadier, who in 1816 also designed the underlying Piazza del Popolo. Valadier made a connection of the hill to the Porta Flaminia and the square with two converging bends that climb up to the terrace, creating a monumental structure.
Above the beautiful square where the Valadier Terrace is, the architect built also his residence, the "Casina Valadier", which became one of Rome's most elegant cafés and until the '90s a prestigious restaurant.
